Healthy Eating and First Aid!

Thank you very much to the ten ladies from Tesco Ledbury and the lady from St. John's Ambulance who came into school on Friday as part of our latest whole school Health and Safety Day.

Tesco held four different workshops in different classrooms focusing on healthy eating, including information and advice on how to eat a balanced diet as each child had a go at making their own mini sandwiches with a variety of fillings to complete each part of the balanced diet wheel such as ham, chicken, various cheeses which were somewhat of an acquired taste to several pupils, as well as the all-important cucumber slices.

Another workshop focused on making healthy fruit salads and revealed the often-surprising amounts of sugar in different foods (did you know that a standard bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate contains no fewer than FIVE sugar cubes? Yikes!), and the children were also told about the importance of food hygiene and food safety as well as how food is needed in order to fuel the body.

Over with St. John's Ambulance, Key Stage 1 were shown how to deal with bleeding as they were also given the chance to practise applying bandages safely (we could have several stand-in first aiders in the making, which is good to know for when we next experience a rather injury-heavy playtime!), while the older children were taught about how to act in an emergency and how to carry out CPR, even being given real mannequins to practise their chest compressions on.

Thank you again to both Tesco and St. John's Ambulance for all of their hard work on the day in giving the children a greater understanding of these vitally important issues, encouraging them to eat more healthily and to increase their awareness of what to do in the case of a medical emergency.

And the next time you're in Tesco, please don't forget to pop the little blue discs that are given out when you purchase your shopping into the Bosbury School container to help to fund a project which could result in our school receiving lots of lovely new books for our library - our pile of discs is currently higher than the other two projects, so keep popping them in Bosbury shoppers up until the end of August!
